On December 7th, Kathrina L. Rashid, Ph.D., MFT spoke to us cultural diversity in child welfare investigations. For her doctoral research, she conducted a study on the cultural, socioeconomic and educational bias against Latinos. She has provided consultation to the Alameda County District Attorney’s Office regarding cross-cultural aspects of domestic violence and sexual assaults.
She has also worked with Judge Stuart Hing, who was our speaker on December 14th. He is an Alameda County Superior Court Justice. He was appointed in 2008 by Governor Arnold Schwartzenegger. Previously he was a Deputy District Attorney in Alameda for 23 years. Judge Hing talked generally about some of his cases. He tries to have a pragmatic approach to sentencing. Both he and Kathrina attended each others presentations at our club, thereby reinforcing their strong working relationship.
A fun fact: Judge Hing played lead guitar in a band that opened for Earth, Wind & Fire in his younger days.
