BIKE CAMP

TEACH THEM TO RIDE AND SEE WHERE THEY CAN GO

Why Bike Camp?

Learning to ride a bike is considered by many to be a rite of passage. However, 90% of people with Down Syndrome never learn to ride a two-wheel bicycle.

How It Works

Prior to camp, we recruited approximately 125 volunteers from our community to bond with and assist our riders.

HOW IT WORKS

40 riders attend one 75-minute session each day for five consecutive days where they learn to ride using the adapted bicycles.

HOW IT WORKS

Continuous adjustments to the bikes stability challenge the riders balance as they gradually discover the skill and joy of riding.

HOW IT WORKS

Riders eventually transition to the outdoor track, working towards their goal – riding independently!

THE FIRST DAY

Riders are introduced to their volunteer spotters and start riding the adaptive bikes!

TANDEM

Shine’s unique tandem bicycle with the rider positioned in the front, gives the rider the experience of riding independently for the first time! Riders are unaware that they are doing all the work!

THE LAUNCH

Once riders have progressed through Shine’s adaptive bikes, they move to the outdoor track where they are LAUNCHED!

INDEPENDENCE!

After riding on the outdoor track on Shine’s bikes, riders then get on their own bikes for the first time!!

TESTIMONIALS

Our in-laws live in a beach town where our extended families gather often. The garage is filled with bicycles and the family rides everywhere they go. Before bike camp, one family member always had to stay with Leah and either walk or drive to the destination that everyone rode the bike to. Now, Leah can ride with us! This is LIFE-CHANGING!

Erick’s progress after the camp has been amazing! We wanna thank you for such a big achievement for all of us! Prior to camp, Erick had only ridden an adult trike and the family was hopeful he could learn a two-wheel bike, SUCCESS!

Will can start and stop on his own now! He loves riding his bike with his friends and his brother! Something he was never able to do.

SUCCESS STORIES

After falling from a bike years ago, Cristian wouldn’t go near a bike, let alone touch a bike. Cristian spent his first 3 days at camp off the bikes.By day 5 Cristian was excidely riding the tandem bike! We are confident that with another week at camp, Cristian will become an independent rider.

CRISTIAN

Born premature, Vincent was not expected to live. Having spent a great deal of his life in a wheelchair, and eating through a feeding tube his entire life, Vincent was riding independently by the end of camp.

VINCENT

Garrison’s parents are avid bike riders and always hoped to do this activity with their son. However, a fall from a bike left Garrison afraid to try again. At 29 years old, Garrison learned to ride, a dream come true for his family!
